10 Of The Most Important Things Owners Of Bridal Shops Wish Your Knew

Visiting bridal shops can be fun and exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. We don’t want you to worry! Our stylists have met many nervous brides and we’re here to help you find the dress for you without any of the worries.

1. Know your budget

Your consultant will ask you what your budget is when you visit bridal shops and it’s important to be honest with them. You don’t want to try on a dress that’s way over budget and fall in love with it. After that, you’ll find it even more difficult to find one within your budget. And if the shop doesn’t stock dresses in your price range? Go to another shop.

2. Plan ahead

You want to block off a full day for visiting bridal shops so you’re relaxed and happy. Finding your gown is such a special time. We’d advise visiting two or three boutiques so you can have a good look at what’s available without getting too confused.

3. Don’t invite too many people

It’s always good to bring someone along with you who you trust. But inviting your whole bridal party isn’t the best idea. Too many opinions can make your first appointment feel overwhelming and your vision will become clouded in terms of knowing what you want and don’t want. We’d say to invite no more than three people. I went with my mum and it was a day I’ll remember forever.

4. Get yourself all dolled up

You want to have some idea of what you’ll look like on the big day, so put a fresh face of makeup on and style your hair in your favourite way. You might as well make the most of it! You want to feel your best when trying on gowns.

5. Wear decent underwear

You’d think this would be common sense but you’d be surprised how many brides neglect this tip! We don’t expect you to buy new just for the occasion, but a seamless pair of undies and a good nude strapless bra are key. This will give you a better idea of how a dress will look and how comfortable you’ll feel in it.

6. Pin some ideas

When I visited bridal shops, I was given four pegs and asked to peg the first four dresses I wanted to try on. Because I had an idea of what I wanted, I pegged three dresses in the style I liked and the fourth was something totally different – which I ended up going for!

So have some idea of the type of dresses you want to try on, but also go with an open mind. Don’t be afraid to try on different styles and fabrics to see what suits you best.

7. Be ready to say yes

You might walk into the first bridal shop you visit and find your perfect dress. It happens! Some boutiques sell samples off the rack and designers may discontinue a dress while you’re trying to decide. If you love a dress, go for it.

8. Know the difference between made-to-order and custom-made

They’re actually two very different things.  A made-to-order dress is what you’ll try on in store. If you find one you love, bridal shops will order you a size closest to your measurements – but you’ll probably still need alterations.

A custom-made dress is made from scratch to fit you and your body.

9. Plan in advance

Give yourself plenty of time when it comes to looking for your dress – especially because it can take up to 6 months to be made. Then you’ll also want to leave time for alterations. We’d advise starting your search at least a year before your wedding and you’ll be sure to find the perfect dress for you.

10. It’s okay if you don’t cry

Some people would say you know when you’ve found “the one” because you cry. I didn’t when I found mine. I felt emotional – but more than anything, I felt completely like myself. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to visiting bridal shops. It’s all about you and your personality. If you feel like the most amazing version of yourself? That’s the dress for you.
