Brides Do Good: How A Wedding Dress Can Make A Difference

How this online bridal boutique is helping to combat child marriage.

Brides Do Good: How A Wedding Dress Can Make A Difference

For many women, buying a wedding dress is the biggest fashion investment they’ll ever make. Yet it’s only worn once.

Bridal boutique Brides Do Good offers a way for women to make this purchase change lives, by donating part of the profits from dress sales to charities. Their mission? To end child marriage by 2030.

Every year, 15 million girls are married before they turn 18. That’s 28 girls every minute. One every two seconds. Early marriage forces girls out of education and into a life of violence, fear, and ill health. Brides Do Good aims to end this.

Founded by Chantal Khoueiry, her inspiration came to life when she had so many friends who didn’t know what to do with their wedding dresses. Now, Brides Do Good sells the world’s most beautiful pre-loved and sample designer wedding gowns.

A third of the sale of every dress sold through the boutique goes to Plan International and Too Young To Wed – charities focused on protecting the world’s potential child brides. This result is a sustainable enterprise that appeals to sellers both on a commercial and an emotional level. Plus, with designers on the site including Alexandra McQueen, Vera Wang, and Monique Lhuillier, it’s a very affordable way for brides-to-be to access luxury prices.

Behind the purpose of Brides Do Good

Child marriage impacts over 15,000,000 girls every single year. Ending it requires a change in what is at the moment, culturally normal. It violates the basic human rights that every girl has to health, education, and safety, meaning the implications are drastic. Girls don’t get to choose their husband or their future.

Their education stops. No one is there to protect them from violence. Many of them become pregnant before their bodies are ready and around 70,000 a year don’t survive labour.

If child marriage doesn’t stop, the global number of women married as children will reach 1.2 billion by 2050, with devastating consequences for the whole world.
